The answer to the airlines constant struggle to make further profits might be the Skyrider 2. We all have been in that crammed economy seat for hours. All we wonder is, can air travel possibly be more uncomfortable??. Unfortunately the answer might be yes.
At the Airliners interiors expo ,Germany in April 2018 an Italian company introduced the saddle seat for high density economy cabin. The seat really reminds me of my college days when we used to lean against the wall to add on to our style quotient. I didn’t know I would have to do the same for air travel.
The Skyrider 2 supports your back and your behind while directing part of your weight to a footboard below!!. It reduces to space between rows to 23 inches. Thereby increasing the passenger carrying capacity of the aircraft by 20%. The weight of the Skyrider is 50% less than conventional seats.
The Skyrider 2 is the second generation product of the Italian company. this time it has added further padding and safety features. Of-course they will have to go through the regulatory authorities before getting an approval to be fitted into any airline.
The good news is, this is just a prototype for now. I hope passengers do not have to stand through their journey. Though these seats might reduce the ticket fare but no doubt the comfort as well.
