Heinkel He 178

The He 178 was the first turbojet powered aircraft ever to be built. It was designed by the German company in accordance its director Ernst Heinkel. In 1936, Hans Van Ohain approached Heinkel with his own prototype centrifugal-flow engine. Now, Heinkel was impressed and with some modifications to the engine, they built the aircraft.

The first flight happened on Aug 27 1939, 3 years after both of these brilliant men met. Piloted by Captain Erich Warsitz, the HE-178 flew for a maximum of 10 minutes which was not appreciated much by the German defence forces.

In his autobiography, he conveys his displeasure towards the German government. He was disappointed in the German leaders for their lack of understanding what a breakthrough his aircraft was.
