Flying training is one of the most expensive courses to be in. On an average the cost to be a pilot conventionally is anywhere between 50-60 lakhs INR. Almost, 90 percent of the students take a loan to get this training done. A lot of money gets spent unnecessarily, this is what i have realised during my flying training is. There are a few things i wish i could have done differently and saved some money. So that you guys dont make the same mistakes i did. Requirements to be a Commercial Pilot- Helicopters

Introduction

Many of us dream of being a commercial pilot in Helicopters. But very few of us know the way. Well, I’m here to tell you the requirements towards being a commercial pilot. In this part I’m not going to talk about the fee structure but the necessary requirements. Well, what a joke, isn’t money the most important thing to be a pilot??. If you want to know how much money is needed click here. In any case, without these basic requirements even money can’t help you. So lets go ahead.



Age requirement to be a commercial pilot- Helicopters

He/She shall be not less than Eighteen years of age on the date of application.

Educational qualifications

He/She shall have passed Class Ten plus Two or equivalent examination. You should have Physics and Mathematics, from a recognized Board/University.

Medical Fitness to be a commercial pilot- Helicopters

He/She shall produce on a prescribed proforma a certificate of physical fitness from an approved Medical Board after undergoing a medical examination. He shall have established his medical fitness on the basis of compliance with the requirements as notified by the Director-General under Rule 39B. Click here to know about 39B.



Knowledge

He/She shall pass a written examination in Air Regulations, Air Navigation, Meteorology and Technical examinations. A Signals examination for interpretation of aural and visual signals as per syllabus, will also be held. You will also need to give an RTR exam conducted by WPC.

Flying experience to get a commercial pilot license- Helicopters

An evidence of having satisfactorily completed not less than one hundred and fifty hours of flight time. It shall include:.

1. not less that fifty hours of flight time as Pilot-in-Command of a helicopter.

2. Should not have less than ten hours of cross-country flight time as Pilot-in-Command of a helicopter.

3.  Not less than ten hours of flight time as Pilot-in-Command of a helicopter within a period of six months. It should be immediately preceding the date of application for licence. Out of which not less than five hours of flight time by night. It shall include not less than ten take-offs and ten landing patterns by night.

4. not less than ten hours of instrument instruction time of which not less than five hours may be instrument ground time.

Skill

He shall have demonstrated his competency to perform the procedures and manoeuvres. As prescribed in the syllabus by day and night to the satisfaction of an approved Examiner. It should on the type of helicopter to which the application for licence relates. It should be within a period of six months immediately preceding the date of application.

  2. Should not have less than twenty hours of cross-country flight time as Pilot-in-Command. It should include a cross-country flight of not less than three hundred nautical miles in the course of which full stop landings at two different aerodromes shall be made.
  3. Not less than ten hours of instrument time. Out of which not more than five hours may be on an approved simulator.
  4. At least five hours of flight time by night. It should include a minimum of ten take-offs and ten landings as Pilot-in-Command as carried out within six months the date of application for licence.

Skill tests

He shall have demonstrated his competency to perform the procedures and manoeuvres prescribed in the syllabus to the satisfaction of an examiner. It should be on the type of aeroplane to which the application for licence relates. Also, within a period of six months immediately preceding the date of application. The competency shall be demonstrated as in:.

  1.  general flying test by day.
  2. general flying test by night.
  3. A cross-country flight test by day. It would consist of a flight of not less than two hundred fifty nautical miles. In the course of which at least one full stop landing at an aerodrome other than the aerodrome of departure shall be made.
  4. A cross-country flying test by night. It would consist of a flight of not less than one hundred twenty nautical miles. Also returning to the place of departure without landing elsewhere.
