pilot in india

How much money do you need to be a pilot??

Introduction

How much money do you need to become a pilot?? Well, I get this question a lot, and my answer is  also the same, ALOT!!

Before getting into flying and dreaming of being a pilot, I always tell people to sort out their finances, as the course is very expensive. First of all let me tell you why is it expensive??. Now, when your flying your hiring a whole aircraft to yourself and also an instructor to add onto your expenses. Hiring a whole aircraft, as you know it is meant for the rich!!. Your also paying a part of the aircraft’s maintenance, insurance, taxes, parking charges, manpower etc and also you pay for the fuel ofcourse. Now to add onto all this, you have to undergo ground classes to pass your exams. Also buy expensive books and also to keep up the fashion wear those expensive rayban glasses to look cool!!

Airplane Pilot

I will be talking about training on both airplanes and helicopters. Starting with airplanes, in India. The initial training with instrument rating and a multi engine endorsement will cost you between 25-30 lakhs INR in India and around 35000 USD in the US for 200 hours. Now if your performance is low, and you end up failing flight checks or if the school thinks your not picking up well, you will have to fly some more hours, which will cost you accordingly.

After your initial training for an airlines in India to absorb you, they will train you on an aircraft on their fleet which is also known as type rating or type training, for which the airlines are charging an average of 30 lakhs INR. Now u can do the type rating on your own as well, on one of the popular  aircrafts flying in the world like the A320, B737 or even the ATR series, it will be a bit cheaper if you do your type rating on your own, but if you do it with the airlines, it comes along with a job guarantee. So finally we are talking about an average of 50-60 lakhs INR, which ofcourse will also vary as per your performance.

Helicopter Pilot

Now lets come to helicopters. You need to fly 150 hours, but the per hour rate in case of helicopters is almost double than that of airplanes. The initial training will cost you an average of 30- 35 lakhs INR or 45-55000 USD in US. Now most of the companies, especially in India are absorbing freshers and getting their type training done for free in exchange for a bond these days. Due to the extreme shortage of helicopter pilots, but lets say, if you do your type training on your own, it will cost you another 10-15 lakhs INR. So in case of helicopters it will come down to a total of 40-50 lakhs INR.

So that was a brief explanation on the finances needed to be a pilot. In case you have doubts always feel free to contact me or email on sanjithkc@yahoo.com
